In order to further strengthen its `Anti-theft campaign' in Korangi Sector 10, the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has joined hands with the local community with the help of a local NGO, to create a Women Empowerment Community Group. A KESC statement here on Thursday said that Korangi-l0, a new sector in Korangi and going through development phase with around 50 percent of the area still under construction, has nearly 2,200 houses and a population of around 12,000 people.
It said that in order to prevent this new area from being infested by clandestine connections, the KESC aims to create a `theft free community' with the help of this group of 10 females. The rationale behind creating the women group is two faced: Firstly, women are usually at the forefront in terms of electricity related problems and the monthly bill payment is part of the household budget.
Secondly, if the women are empowered through a monthly stipend, it will create part time employment opportunities which will result in a win-win situation for KESC and the community as these women have a greater understanding of the psyche of their own people and will demonstrate a more holistic approach while dealing with them.
