Gasquet advances in Rome

09 May, 2011

Richard Gasquet, the 16th seed, made light work of Spanish opponent Albert Montanes on Sunday to reach the second round of the Rome International here. The Frenchman, a former number seven and junior world number one, never looked in trouble as he eased to a 6-2, 6-3 victory that will see him play a qualifier in the next round.
Argentine Juan Monaco upset the home fans by beating Andreas Seppi 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to set up a second round clash with seventh seed Tomas Berdych. However there was better news for Italian wild card Filippo Volandri who thrashed Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker 6-1, 6-2 and will face either compatriot and fellow wild card Fabio Fognini or 14th seed Stanislas Wawrinka in the next round.
