Impartial probe into Abbottabad attack demanded

10 May, 2011

Representatives of bars have demanded investigation in Abbottabad attack through some impartial commission and punishment for the responsible either he was president, prime minister or any officer of army.
While addressing a joint press conference here on Monday representatives Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Punjab Bar Council (PbBC), Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) and Lahore Bar Association (LBA) said that the commission should include retired non-controversial judges and some noble personalities of other walks of life.
They said deficiencies in intelligence agencies should be pointed out. Terming the operation 'Geronimo' as against the sovereignty of Pakistan, PBC vice chairman Latif Afridi said the operation was on the integrity and solidarity of Pakistan. He said, it seemed that existence of Pakistan was in danger. He said it is the time to hold accountability of the intelligence agencies.
SCBA president Asma Jahangir said it is the time to realise the sensitivity of the affairs. She said earlier, East Pakistan was ruined, Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report was swept under the carpet, and there was no information what happened to the Kargil Commission. She suggested that political and defence leadership must make some comprehensive strategies for the defence of the country and bring our home in order.
Asma also criticised elevation of judges excluding the Lahore lawyers. She said consent of the bar was must in elevation of judges. She said elevation of judges on the basis of intelligence reports was not fair. SCBA secretary Qamar Zaman Qureshi said after Abbotabad attack it was not fair to criticise our own institutions. However, he said there should be impartial investigation to unearth the truth.
