Karachi targeted killings echo in Sindh Assembly

10 May, 2011

A female legislator belonging to opposition in Sindh Assembly on Monday left the house spellbound as she set forth undeniable arguments to support her adjournment motion with regard to targetted killings while the government tried to avoid debate saying the matter was sub judice.
Opposition member Syeda Marvi Rashdi wanted the government to respond to her motion but found a dodgy reply from the treasury. The government stuck to its weak stance over the issue of violence in Karachi with arguments like the issue was sub judice and a sensitive one, therefore could not be brought into discussion in the house. Rashdi said under the article 9 of the Constitution, every citizen's life and property was the government's responsibility to protect but in Sindh there has been a deniable attitude about the law, causing disorder, which inflicted sufferings on the people.
She said violence had become a daily issue in Karachi and across the province. The government should take notice of it and restore the order. She said the issue had serious implications and the government must fulfil its responsibilities. She said the government must trace targetted killers and bring them to justice. She said that she had the right to speak to defend her adjournment motion and nobody could legally bar her from doing so.
PPP's law maker Ghulam Qadir Chandio objected to her comments "nobody could stop her..." saying these words should be expunged from the house proceedings on which Speaker Nisar Khuhro said they could not be done for the TV channels were giving live coverage to the assembly session. However, he warned the female assembly members to be careful in choosing words while discussing issues in the house.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said the cases of target killings were in the courts and therefore the issue could not be discussed. Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq said the members from Functional League were also part of the government and raising such issue was illogical, adding that blame game was not the solution to the problems.
He said nobody should take political advantage of issues of sensitive nature and there was need for seriousness to solve them. He suggested that the house should reserve a day in a week to discuss issues related to law and order. Opposition leader Jam Madad Ali said anyone either from opposition or treasury bench could table a motion on this important issue for debate. He said the issue of targetted killings should be solved for it was sensitive. He said people had voted legislators to solve their problems. On which, the Speaker asked Ayaz Soomro to tell the house about the nature of the cases under trial in the court and reserved the ruling on the adjournment motion on targetted killings until Tuesday.
