12 May, 2011

Indus River System Authority (Irsa) released 31,000 cusecs more water from the dams on Wednesday so that Pakistan Electric Power Company's hydel power generating units at Tarbela and Mangla could produce maximum cheap electricity to bridge the gap between demand and supply.
The 11th May rivers flows and reservoirs level report of Water and Power Development Authority says that Irsa discharged 81,100 cusecs water from Tarbela 21,000 cusecs more than Tuesday's outflow. Tarbela hydel powerhouses have the capacity to produce more than 3300MW electricity during peak monsoon season. Irsa released 55,000 cusecs water downstream the Mangla dam, 10000 cusecs more than the previous day's outflow to generate 950MW electricity.
