US MIDDAY: coffee and sugar up

19 May, 2011

Raw sugar futures jumped to close up 4.2 percent on Wednesday, taking the upward cue from the rallying commodities complex. Arabica coffee also climbed as concerns about tight supplies remained and after it closed above the 100-day moving average Tuesday, although volume was thin.
US cocoa futures finished modestly higher and in light dealings. The key July raw sugar contract jumped 0.92 cent, or 4.2 percent, to finish at 22.85 cents per lb. July arabica coffee futures rose 3.95 cents, or 1.5 percent, to close at $2.7005 per lb. Key July cocoa futures finished up $15 at $2,995 per tonne.
