The top officials of leading development institutions and power distribution companies on Saturday unanimously called for implementation of Building Code of Pakistan-Energy Provisions 2011 to conserve energy in a bid to steer the country out of worsening energy crisis.
Speaking at a workshop, the officials of MDA, CDA, QDA, GDA, LDA, RDA, IESCO, FESCO, HESCO, PEPCO, LESCO, GEPCO, KESC, PWD, NHA, DHA, EPA, Irrigation & Power department, Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners stressed the need for implementing the Building Code of Pakistan-Energy Provisions 2011. The workshop was jointly organised by National Energy Conservation Centre (ENERCON) and National Productivity Organisation (NPO).
They stressed to introduce alternate energy resources like solar energy to meet the growing energy demands. They were of the view that collective efforts were required to achieve the desired goals. In his welcome address, Managing Director, ENERCON, Faridullah Khan lamented that 25-30% energy was being wasted in all sectors. He said that if the Building Code was implemented, 30% energy could be saved.
He further said that the workshop was organised to highlight objectives of the Building Code. He called upon the development authorities and power distribution companies to implement the Building Code of Pakistan-Energy Provisions 2011 to save energy. He also urged the need to develop enforcement strategies and mechanism of monitoring.
The MD ENERCON said that his department had been organising training courses and workshops to harvest the potential of energy conservation. He further said that a number of initiatives have also been taken including labelling of the product to facilitate consumers with regard to price and voltage etc. Khan said that energy could be preserved if certain steps were taken like networking of computers. He sought the co-operation of all stakeholders for energy conservation.
In the first technical session, Syed Salman Masood, Deputy GM (SS), NPO gave presentation on implementation if the Building Energy Code Potential & Needs. He said that the buildings can be classified by energy systems including building envelop, lighting, HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems and equipment and service water heating.
He said that the purpose of Energy Provision 2011 is to provide minimum requirements for energy efficient design and construction of buildings. He said in this current scenario, energy has become a defining factor in the progress of nations. He added for Pakistan, it is absolutely imperative to improve energy efficiency in buildings by incorporating international best practices appropriate to environment, coupled with traditional materials, technologies and craftsmanship developed indigenously over a very long time. He said that development authorities would chalk out effective action plan to implement the Building Code of Pakistan.
