Working groups formed to identify issues of journalists

30 May, 2011

Three working groups were formed at a seminar to formulate and identify the issues in respect of protecting journalists (covering disasters) and their rights (salary, wage board award, professional training).
The seminar 'Protection of Journalists, Charter of Rights', was organised by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) in collaboration with Foundation Open Society Institute, here on Sunday at a hotel.
A large number of senior journalists, former editors, and anchorpersons from all over the country attended the seminar.
The issue of protection of journalists covering incidents of terrorism, natural disasters, public protest and training of the journalists including photo journalists and others assisting them were discussed at length.
The meeting also discussed the labour laws and the opinion held by the superior courts including Shariat Court.
The meeting observed that threats to journalists are multi faceted and multi dimensional and need to be studied properly for developing adequate strategy to protect the lives of journalists.
The meeting also urged the PFUJ leaders to activate the unions of journalists and also to invite other trade unions for a massive movement to ensure rule of law and enforcement of existing laws, as all issues confronting the journalists as a community and the entire nation, emanates from failure in administration of "Good Governance" which is due to absence of the rule of law.
