In the remaining two days of current fiscal year 2010-11, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is faced with a gigantic task of collecting Rs 116.74 billion to meet the thrice downward revised revenue collection target of Rs 1588 billion.
Sources told Business Recorder here on Tuesday that the Board has provisionally collected around Rs 159 billion during 27 days of June, against the month's target of Rs 275.5 billion, reflecting a shortfall of Rs 116.5 billion. The FBR has collected nearly Rs 159 billion up to June 27 against Rs 128.34 billion in the same period last fiscal year, reflecting an increase of 23.8 percent.
Apparently, it is an uphill task to collect Rs 116.74 billion in 2-3 days. Surprisingly, the FBR had estimated to collect Rs 279.2 billion in June 2011 against the target of Rs 275.5 billion, reflecting an increase of Rs 3.7 billion. The estimated collection for June 28 is Rs 11.3 billion, June 29 Rs 27.3 billion, and the FBR has estimated to collect Rs 67 billion on the last day of the current month ie June 30, 2011.
The FBR data, compiled on June 28, shows that total (provisional) revenue collection amounted to Rs 1471.26 billion during July-June (2010-11) against target of Rs 1588 billion, reflecting a shortfall of Rs 116.74 billion. The FBR has provisionally collected Rs 1471.26 billion during July-June 26, 2011 against Rs 1265 billion in the same period of last fiscal year, reflecting an increase of 16.3 percent.
Direct tax collection stood at Rs 552.868 billion against Rs 485.130 billion of last year, reflecting an increase of 14 percent. Sales tax collection was Rs 609.51 billion against Rs 508.227 billion, showing an increase of 19.9 percent. Sales tax collection at the import stage was Rs 302.534 billion against Rs 240.477 billion, reflecting an increase of 25.6 percent. Sales tax collection on domestic consumption was Rs 306.978 billion against Rs 267.750 billion, reflecting an increase of 14.7 percent.
The FBR collected Rs 133.318 billion as federal excise duty (FED) during the period under review against Rs 117.536 billion, showing an increase of 13.4 percent. The collection of customs duty was Rs 175.562 billion during July-June 2010-11against Rs 154.261 billion, showing an increase of 13.8 percent. The data of refund and rebate shows that the FBR paid refunds and rebates to the tune of Rs 93.459 billion during July-June 2010-11 against Rs 78.046 billion, reflecting 19.7 percent increase.
The monthly collection shows that the FBR collected approximately Rs 159 billion during June 2011 against nearly Rs 129 billion in June of last year, reflecting an increase of 23.8 percent. Break-up shows that direct tax collection stood at around Rs 71.68 billion against Rs 60.139 billion, reflecting an increase of 19.2 percent. The collection of domestic taxes (direct taxes, sales tax and federal excise duty) was Rs 142.464 billion against Rs 113.828 billion, reflecting an increase of 25.2 percent.
The sales tax collection was Rs 57.080 billion during this period against Rs 42.994 billion, showing an increase of 32.8 percent. The federal excise duty (FED) collection stood at Rs 13.704 billion during current month against Rs 10.695 billion, reflecting an increase of 28.1 percent. The collection of customs duty was Rs 16.402 billion during this period against Rs 14.520 billion, showing an improvement of 13 percent.
