Sindh Power department has electrified more than 800 villages of the province in 2010-11 while work on electrification of more villages is underway. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah had approved Rs 1000 million for electrification of villages of Sindh.
The allocated funds were utilised by the department through Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) and Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO). The KESC has electrified many villages situated in suburbs of the metropolis while Hesco electrified more than 750 villages of many districts of the province, sources said.
For overseeing and monitoring the electrification works, a few days ago the department notified Monitoring and Implementation Unit (MIU). The chief miniter had approved budget for the unit. Office of the MIU would be established in Hyderabad while staff of four to five officials would work in the Unit. An official of Power department told Business Recorder that Power department was completely ignored by the provincial governments in the past but PPP-led Sindh government had strengthened this department. He told that working for construction of six Hydel power projects was underway.
