Taiwan stocks higher

Taiwan stocks closed 0.46 percent higher on Wednesday, with smartphone maker HTC climbing 3.3 percent ahead of its second-quarter earnings due later in the afternoon. The main TAIEX index rose 40 points to 8,824.44, after opening flat. LCD makers and electronics shares outperformed the main index, rising 1.43 percent and 1.01 percent respectively.
TSMC slipped 0.55 percent after a media report that the top chip maker might cut full-year capital expenditure by 10 percent this year. Rival UMC rose 0.35 percent. Banking shares climbed 0.86 percent.
