All operations at Customs house, Karachi, on Thursday came to a halt as the life in the city remained paralysed in response to the statement of Zulfiqar Mirza against the country's fourth largest political party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). The wave of tension engulfed the city since the statement of Mirza was aired by different news channels.
Although the customs offices remained opened with very thin attendance, there was no clearance of cargo because of non-presence of importers and their clearing agents. The Pakistan Automated Customs Clearance System (PaCCS) and the appraisement collectorate of Karachi port and Port Qasim, which supposed to generate Rs 2 billion in a day by processing to 2100 GDs of imports and around 2250 GDs of exports, have witnessed no revenue collection in the wake of poor law and order situation.
