The United States on Saturday announced its support to the transparent Abbottabad Commission, saying that it respects the independence of the Commission, tasked to investigate the US Seals covert raid that led to killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011.
"The United States respects the independence of the Abbottabad Commission and believes that justice is always served by transparency", said a statement of the US Embassy here to contradict a news report that said that Washington was pushing Islamabad not to make public the findings of the Abbottabad Commission constituted to investigate the circumstances shrouding the presence and death of Osama bin Laden. The embassy described the report as 'false', saying that an article published in a Pakistani newspaper cited unnamed sources to allege that the United States government opposes publicising the findings of the Abbottabad Commission.
"This story is false", added the brief statement by the embassy. It, however, did not provide details whether the United States officials would like to explain their positions to the Abbottabad Commission, which, according to the report, is planning to approach them (US officials) to explain their position on the information collected from the CIA's arrested local informants, which the report termed as the main reason for which the US was objecting to publicise the findings of the Commission.
