'Blasphemous content': protest over publication of book

30 Jul, 2011

Scores of people staged a protest demonstration against a book, which is said to have carried a blasphemous content, in the limits of Aram Bagh police station on Friday. The protesters, who took to streets to express their disenchantment against that book, burned tyres and chanted slogans against its author and publisher. They marched from Burns Road towards Tower.
Their protest led to a traffic jam affecting a whole lot of intersecting streets for several hours. The charged mob also set publisher's bike on fire at the Fresco roundabout. According to DSP Preedy, Malik Mazhar, the book was originally written in Iran in Persian. He said that the accused - the local translator and publisher - were detained and a case (181/11) was registered under 295-A and 295-C of Pakistan Penal Code in the Aram Bagh police station.
