The Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) has restored supply of 80MW electricity to Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) on Thursday, said official sources. The KANUPP had earlier suspended operations for maintenance and overhauling of plant due to which supply of electricity to the city was further declined by 80MW.
After getting 80 megawatt electricity from KANUPP the KESC management will able reduce loadshedding in city up to one and half hours, they said. Some 80MW supply has been restored, which would help utility to provide electricity to most affected areas, including Landhi, Liaquatabad, Orangi, Lyari and outskirts o the city.
The demand of the power has reached 2500MW in metropolitan and the power generation is 2150MW bringing the power shortfall to around 350MW. The electricity shortfall is causing six to eight hours loadshedding across the city. The power utility's nine gas turbines of 25 megawatts each can generate about 180MW, but they have been declared decommissioned for unknown reasons.
KESC is renting 650 megawatts from Pepco, 248 megawatts from IPPs (Tapal and Gul Ahmed), 50MW from Pakistan Steel Mills, 14MW from Anud Power, 400KW from wind power and 3MW from Aptma. Meanwhile, several areas of the city were affected by power failures. The localities of North Karachi, Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, PECHS Block-2, Shadman Town, Orangi, Old areas, Lyari, PIB Colony, Model Colony, faced prolonged and frequent power failures.
