ICCI calls to promote remanufacturing industry

06 Aug, 2011

The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) on Friday stressed the need for promoting remanufacturing and recycling industry to utilise scrap material instead of letting it go waste. "Pakistan is producing huge quantities of scrap in different areas and government should focus on promoting remanufacturing and recycling industry to utilise it," ICCI President Mahfooz Elahi said in a statement issued here.
He said the government should also establish a network of scrap yards which could act as a source of input material for remanufacturing and recycling industry. He urged the government to support small and medium sized enterprises in developing remanufacturing and recycling plants, adding, those plants could be set up in different areas including steel, auto, synthetic, plastic, paper and rubber sectors to develop value added products from scrap.
Mahfooz Elahi was of the view that remanufacturing industry was also consuming less energy as compared to industrial units as only five percent energy was required to re-melt aluminium than to extract it from the ore. He said that millions of computer accessories and electronic items join scrap dumps and pose a challenge for effective disposal, however, promoting of remanufacturing and recycling industry could easily utilise this scrap. ICCI President said the remanufacturing and recycling industry could also provide a substantial boost to the manufacturing sector and the whole economy in terms of cuts in imports and unemployment and production of cheap products.
