THE RUPEE: dollar recovers

12 Aug, 2011

The rupee fell against dollar on the currency market on Thursday in process of trading, dealers said. The rupee surrendered overnight firmness in terms of dollar, losing five paisa for buying and selling at 86.35 and 86.40, they said.
A storm of market rumours questioning the financial solidity of a major French bank and talk of an impending downgrade of France's credit rating, all denied by authorities, rattled already shaky market confidence. The US dollar stayed on the defensive as investors were reluctant to hold on to longs after the Federal Reserve pledged to keep interest rates near zero for two years and left the door open to adding more stimulus if needed.
Greenback was trading at Rs 45.25 against the Indian rupee, the dollar was available at 3.0110 Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was trading at 6.3973 Chinese yuan per dollar.
