Girls outshine boys in PU BA, BSc exams

Outshining boys, girls clinched all top three positions in BA and BSc annual examination 2011 of Punjab University. PU BA, BSc result was announced here on Friday. Out of the total, 153,688 candidates appeared in BA/BSc exams, out which 52,396 were declared successful, indicating a pass percentage of 34.09. While the last year overall pass percentage was 28.75. According to the result, girls clinched all three positions of BSc and first position of BA exams.
In BSc exam, Rida Arshad of Government College for Women Toba Tek Singh with 682 marks secured the 1st position, Arfa Waseem of Superior Science College Satellite Town Gujranwala with 677 marks grabbed second while Sadia Parveen of Al-Beruni Government College Pind Dadan Khan with 668 marks won third position.
Similarly, in BA exam, external candidate from Shahdara Lahore Iqra Abbas with 668 marks clinched first position, external candidate from Bahawalpur District Muhammad Zahid Zaheer Iqbal with 665 marks secured second while external candidate from Shadbagh Lahore Muhammad Hamza with 664 marks grabbed third position.
Earlier, Punjab University organised a ceremony in honour of position holders of BA/BSC. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran was the chief guest while Registrar Professor Dr Muhammad Akhtar, Controller Examinations Professor Dr Liaqat Ali, Additional Controller Ahmad Ali Chattha, Treasurer Dr Uzma Ikram, senior faculty members, position holder students, their parents and principals of respective colleges were also present on the occasion.
Vice Chancellor also presented cheques amounting to rupees Rs 100,000/-, Rs 75,000/- and Rs 65,000/- as cash reward to the students who attained first, second and third positions respectively in the BA/BSc exam 2011 and also presented shields to the principals of their respective colleges.
This year all the three leading positions in BSc have been clinched by female students. While in BA, a female student clinched first while second and third positions were grabbed by male students. Dr Kamran also announced a cash award of Rs 300, 000 for Examination Branch employees who had worked day and night to prepare results within a short period.
While addressing the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran said that educated nations were powerful and ruling the country and urged the Muslims to realise the value of education. He said sectarianism and those involved in killing each other had no link with Islam. He said America spent seven percent of its GDP on education whereas Pakistan even did not consume two percent of its GDP.
Dr Mujahid Kamran said the PU had carried out a survey and according to initial results boys could not complete their studies due to financial constraints whereas girls were ambitious to come forward. According to the statistics in the category of regular candidates, as many as 41314 candidates appeared in B.A/B.Sc examinations and 22059 candidates passed with the percentage of 53.39.
In the category of Late College candidates, 13,643 candidates appeared and 4366 passed with the percentage of 32.00. The pass percentage of external candidates stands 26.08 as 97786 appeared and 25506 candidates passed the examination. The statistics issued by controller office show that overall 11796 candidates secured 1st division, 36317 candidates secured 2nd division and 2636 candidates secured 3rd division.
In B.A, 1411 boys secured 1st, 6011 boys 2nd and 684 boys secured 3rd division while 7,788 girls secured 1st division, 24,604 secured 2nd and 1,366 girls secured 3rd division. In BSc, 362 boys got 1st division, 1,311 boys 2nd and 250 boys got third division while 2,235 girls secured 1st, 4,391 girls 2nd and 336 girls secured 3rd division.
