17 Aug, 2011

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights Tuesday summoned details of the achievements awards of National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) distributed among top management of the bank during 2008-10. The parliamentary panel on Human Rights, which met with MNA Riaz Fatyana in the chair, discussed the matters related to the alleged violation in the hiring process of the NBP.
Earlier briefing the committee, NBP Group Chief Dr Mirza Abrar Baig said that all group chiefs were granted cash awards ranging from Rs 2 million to Rs 8 million. According to him, the then NBP President, Ali Raza, was awarded Rs 12 million, excluding the perks and privileges as well as the monthly salary.
About the recruitment in the bank, Baig said the bank had not been hiring employees on a permanent basis since 1994. However, it had been hiring management trainee officers who later got permanent positions in the bank following the completion of requisite process. The committee members were however unhappy as the NBP officials had not given details of the quota system in appointments.
The committee members were of the view that merit and transparency were not ensured by the management of the bank in recruitment, promotions and distribution of welfare fund, which they termed a violation of human rights as per article of 125 of the Constitution.
