Partly Facetious: You can't change anything named after Jinnah

20 Aug, 2011

"What's in a name?"
"Pretty much everything!"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Names do matter a lot to our people, be they politicians or..."
"How did you figure that?"
"Well President Zardari gave his three children Bhutto as a middle name."
"That was for political reasons. Though I doubt if there is any Pakistani who is unaware that the three children are half Bhutto."
"Right but the name mattered which is why he didn't change their last name."
"Ah yes...but what's wrong with that!"
"That shows a dynastic tendency."
"You can't blame him - he is the progeny of a dynasty which he rightly intends to pass on to his children."
"True, but Indira Gandhi didn't change the name of her children to Nehru if you know what I mean."
"Not fair. Indira Gandhi was a leader in her own right while President Zardari became a leader after the unfortunate assassination of his wife."
"I guess it's a different situation. But I still maintain in our country it's all in the name. There is Benazir International Airport, frankly that is one of the worst airports that I have had the misfortune to use in my life, if I were President Zardari I would rename it Mohammad Sharif airport."
"Hey that is a good political move - it would make the Sharifs happy and heap scorn of all those who use it on the opposition."
"And I would suggest renaming the Karachi airport Benazir Bhutto airport..."
"You can't change anything named after Jinnah - that's a cardinal rule no one has flouted yet."
"While you can defy the Quaid's vision and..."
"That's right."
"Did you ever eat Benazir kulfa - a shop in Lahore sells it!"
"Shhh...."
"Why?"
"It's very tasty and if I know the Sharif's they may send a revenue officer to harass the owner who may be forced to sell out."
"Don't be facetious."
