Principal Postgraduate Medical Institute Prof. Dr. Tariq Sallahuddin has said that the presence of Anaesthesia specialists is a must for surgery in hospitals. Without anaesthesia doctors, the team of surgeons is incomplete, as anaesthetists play the role of lifesaver during operation.
He expressed these views while congratulating the 14 successful doctors who have passed the examination of diploma in Anaesthesia from the Department of Anaesthesiology, PGMI. These doctors were inducted through National Maternal New-born and Child Health (NMNCH) Programme, Punjab for the diploma. Dr. Tariq Sallahuddin further said that there is sever shortage of anaesthetists at district and tehsil level in Punjab causing great difficulties for doctors as well as patients to be operated. PGMI is performing its due role to make up this deficiency by conducting diploma courses in anaesthesia. He said that PGMI is providing all necessary facilities and training opportunities to the anaesthesia doctors enabling them perform their duties independently wherever they are posted.
Professor Dr Tariq Sallahuddin appreciated the services of Department of Anaesthesiology and expressed the hope that diploma holder doctors would put all their efforts to provide proper anaesthesia cover to rural area patients, hence making the National Maternal New-born and Child Health programme a success.
Prof. Dr. Khalid Bashir of Anaesthesiology Department PGMI also felicitated the diploma holders and said that in absence of anaesthetists no hospital can claim of providing comprehensive medical cover to the patients. He said that 70-80 percent of work in hospitals is dependent on anaesthetists and if we strengthened the Department of Anaesthesiology, we can improve overall healthcare.
