Supreme Court's suo motu notice?

26 Aug, 2011

This refers to August 23 lead media news headline, "SC takes suo motu notice of Karachi violence". This news report has immensely amused the cynic and the skeptic, for the simple reason that as to what the apex court can practically do, under the circumstances, beyond taking a yet another suo motu notice, one of the many taken during the last three years or so?
What decision, order or directive can the Supreme Court issue in this regard for implementation? Frankly and candidly speaking, nothing! Should the Supreme Court, following the taking of the above suo motu notice, take a decision, will the apex court's decision and directive, be implemented by the government? The SC's suo motu notice, like all the previous such notices, will again be a waste of time and an exercise in abject futility, since nothing concrete will come out of it.
