Vice Chancellor University of Sindh, Professor Dr Nazir A. Mughal has said that presently, Rs 21 million are available for research, and scholars and teachers of the university should develop proposals and it is a challenge for them to utilise the available funds through research.
Chinese literature studies will be started in the Area Study Centre Far East and South East Asia of the University, he added. He was addressing a gathering of university's pro vice chancellors of various campuses, deans of the faculties, directors and chairpersons of teaching institutes and departments and others officials during a briefing in connection with the opening and functions of Office of Directorate of Research, Innovations and Commercialisation (ORIC) on Friday.
The vice chancellor expressed disagreement towards the lack of facilities of research and said that presently, Rs four million are available from the amount of Rs seven million which were received by the university during 2004 and added that rupees four million remained unutilised since 2004. He said that during 1995, in his first tenure, he announced a research package for the scholars for doing Ph.D from the universities of the country.
He added that now a good number of faculty members in the science disciplines having Ph.D from abroad are available and they could help out the young faculty. Dr Mughal said that healthy environment for the research scholars is available and added that apart from HEC funding many other organisations are ready to provide help to the research scholars for their quality of research. He said that he has raised slogan that good things are happening in the University of Sindh and advised the faculty members to join voice for the development of the University with the slogan.
Dr Parvez Pathan, Director Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialisation, while highlighting the objectives and functions of ORIC, informed that previously, only nine universities established ORIC while the University of Sindh is on number 10 for establishment of OIRC out of 200 universities. He highlighted key areas of the ORIC and structural set up and said that its main objective is to develop the capacity of scholars for the promotion of research and utilisation of research produced by the scholars.
