Ministry of Water and Power has sent a summary of four percent hike in electricity tariff to the Federal Cabinet. The summary was sent to the Cabinet on the advice of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. Water and Power officials say the summary was initially forwarded to the Prime Minister on October 8 for approval.
The Prime Minister directed the ministry to send it to the Federal Cabinet for deliberations owing to current political situation in the country, sources say. The price of electricity would go up by four percent if the cabinet approved the summary.
The government will earn additional revenue of Rs 2.50 billion every month after the final approval and issuance of notification. The fresh raise will be charged in the form of equalisation surcharge. The Federal Government will pay subsidy from this revenue.
