Computerised Electoral Rolls-2011: ECP completes nationwide verification process

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has completed the nationwide verification process of Computerised Electoral Rolls-2011 in collaboration with Nadra. The ECP held a meeting on Monday under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner former Justice Hamid Ali Mirza. Members ECP, Secretary ECP, Provincial Election Commissioners and other senior officers also attended the meeting.
While, reviewing the process of verifications, the ECP issued fresh directives. During the meeting, the committee was informed that the verification process in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been completed. However, completion will take a couple of days in Punjab province. It is 100 percent in 26 districts out of 30 districts of Balochistan, while in rest of four districts, ie Panjgor, Awaran, Mastung and Washuk efforts are underway to cover it in coming two weeks. Verification process has also almost been completed in 15 districts of Sindh province, while the remaining 12 flood-affected districts would be evaluated after two weeks, the meeting was informed.
Ishtiak Ahmad Khan informed that despite floods, adverse law and order situation in some parts of the country; all efforts were made by the ECP to complete the verification exercise by the target date , ie 31st October 2011. He further said that the ECP has now almost completed the process and will hand over the collected data to Nadra before November 15, 2011 for scanning, data entry and printing purposes which will later be displayed nationwide for 21 days at 50,000 display centres for inviting claims, objections, and corrections.
Chairman Nadra briefed about the process involved in preparation of Preliminary Electoral Rolls (PERs) and assured that Nadra will complete the process of scanning, data entry and printing etc within the stipulated time. As regards to SMS service to be provided to the voters for verification their individual records, it was decided that the IT Wing will take necessary step for lodging this service.
About fresh delimitation of constituencies, the Commission observed that as per Constitution of Pakistan, fresh delimitation is carried out after publication of detailed survey report of population census by the Ministry of Statistics. As no date for starting population census has finalised.
It was also decided by the Commission that Revising Authorities to receive claims, objections regarding Electoral Rolls-2011 shall be senior government servants. The ECP also directed Chairman Nadra Ali Arshad Hakeem to take all possible steps to ensure registration of all 18 years citizens and overcome the problems being faced by the people in obtaining CNICs.
