E&T department admits increase of illicit liquor sale in Karachi

Provincial Secretary Excise & Taxation (E&T) department Manzoor Memon has admitted that consumption of illicit liquor in Karachi has been increased when M/s Murree Brewery has significantly dropped its sale in Sindh. This was stated in a report submitted to the Chief Minister Secretariat by the Secretary Excise & Taxation department a few days back, a copy of which is available with Business Recorder.
Report said that there is need to maintain proper supply of PMFL by M/s Murree Brewery in the Sindh in order to save lives of Non-Muslim consumers of Liquor on urgent basis so that these incidents may not occur. Report said that the E&T department has taken up this issue with Government of Punjab.
Report further said that authorities of E&T suspended Shaukat Ansari, Beat Incharge/Excise and Taxation Inspector and Rafeeq. Show-cause notices have been issued to Deputy Director/ Senior Excise & Taxation Officer District South Karachi, while Divisional Intelligence Officer and Director (Excise), E&T Karachi has been called upon to explain their position in this regard, report added.
Report mentioned that under the directives of Minister for Excise & Taxation Mukesh Kumar Chawla, a team was constituted by the Director General, Excise & Taxation Sindh comprising of Divisional Intelligence officer (Excise) Karachi and Deputy Director/Senior Excise & Taxation Officer, District South Karachi under the supervision of Director (Excise), Excise Taxation Karachi with the directives to probe into the matter of death toll of 16 persons who consumed the toxic liquor. In this connection, an official of E&T department told Business Recorder that if E&T would take stand seriously, illicit Liquor would not be supplied in Karachi or other parts of province.
