Non-payment of Railways salaries: Supreme Court to resume hearing today

A two-member Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice IftikharMuhammad Chaudhry and Justice Shakirullah Jan on Thursday will hear suo motu case relating to non-payment of salaries and pensions to employees and workers of Pakistan Railways.The SC has directed PR to file references in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after initiating action against corrupt officials who turned national railways into an ailing entity.
A severe action against the offenders was also directed who purchased bulbs for Railways at the rate of Rs 400, instead of Rs 7 each bulb. However, the authorities were directed to take effective measures to get evacuated valuable property of PR from the land mafia in Sindh and other parts of the country.
Besides, PR representatives were ordered to obtain complete information regarding corrupt officials of Pakistan Railways, involved in the sale of railway scrap on cheap rates and send their cases to NAB. On the last date of hearing, a former minister for Railways Rashid Ahmed, being a party of the case, submitted before the SC that bad management to run the trains had caused substantial monetary loss to the national entity. On the occasion, the Attorney General was also asked to convene a meeting of the officials of Pakistan Railways for a comprehensive plan to make the organisation functional and submit its report on November 10.
