THE RUPEE: dollar inches up

The rupee fell marginally against dollar in interbank market on Monday, while it maintained its weekend levels in terms of the greenback, dealers said. The rupee slipped versus dollar, dropping five paisa for buying and selling at 86.65 and 86.70, they said.
The common currency was at $1.3754, having risen as high as $1.3811 in early trade, and slightly above $1.3751 hit in New York late on Friday. It also firmed against yen, reaching 106.71 yen at one point from New York's 106.02. The dollar versus the Indian rupee was available at Rs 50.08, in terms of the Malaysian ringgit it was trading at 3.1330 and dollar was at 6.347 in relation to the Chinese yuan. Interbank buy/sell rates for taka against dollar on Monday: 76.48-76.48 (previous 76.41-76.45) Call Money Rates: 21.00/21.00 percent (previous 10.00-21.00 percent).

According to the currency dealers, the dollar's demand could not remain intact that helped rupee improvement. At the end of trading, the dollar was closed lower at Rs 86.15 and Rs 86.55 as its buying and selling rates against the last Saturday closing of Rs 86.20 and Rs 86.70 respectively, the dealers said.
Similarly, the rupee also showed strength and appreciated its worth against the pound sterling. The pound's buying and selling rates were declined from previous closing of Rs 137.80 and Rs 138.70 to Rs 137.00 and Rs 138.00, respectively, the dealers added.
The dollar resumed trading at Rs 87.60 (buying) and Rs 88.05 (selling) against last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 87.60 (buying) and Rs 88.05 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 137.80 (buying) and Rs 137.90 (selling) against same overnight value. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 137.80 (buying) and Rs 137.90 (selling).
