Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wasan on Wednesday announced that the provincial government would established Witness Protection Units (WPUs) in Sindh including Karachi. He stated this during a meeting at Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) here. He said that work to establish the units would start from Thursday.
He said that he had conceived the idea of WPUs to encourage people to give witness in courts without any fear so that the culprits involved in murder, kidnapping, robbery, and other heinous crimes could be punished. The units will provide security to the life and property of witnesses and to their families.
Wasaan said that the government was contemplating to make legislation so that criminals involved in land grabbing and extortion could be given exemplary punishment. He said that the government also planned to provide mobile phone locater to CPLC and law enforcing agencies to trace criminals using mobile phone and threatening innocent people. The minister said that President of Pakistan had given him the task to improve law and order situation and restore peace in Karachi, which deteriorated few months ago. He said the city was facing very serious law and order situation when he took over as home minister, but condition at present was much better.
The minister admitted that street crimes have registered slight increase during last few weeks, saying that efforts are being made to control and apprehend the culprits. He said that the purpose of his of visit to KATI and other associations was to get feedback and suggestions from business community regarding the government efforts to control law and order situation.
He assured the business community and general public that the government would provide them conducive and peaceful environment. He vowed that the government would leave no stone unturned to protect the life and property of general pubic and business community.
