Fisheries, poultry sectors: Sindh government has no rehabilitation package for rain-hit districts

Sindh government has not prepared the rehabilitation package for the people of 17 out of 23 rain affected districts who had suffered losses of about Rs 1.3 billion on the account of destruction of fisheries and poultry sectors due to heavy rains.
The said figures of losses were stated in a report compiled by Sindh Livestock and Fisheries department, available with Business Recorder. Report, which included losses of Fisheries and Poultry from August 12 to September 15-2011, said that recent heavy rains have badly affected the poultry and fisheries sectors of the province.
Rain-affected people suffered about Rs 750 million losses in the fisheries sector. District Thatta, Tando Mohammad Khan, Shaheed Benazirbabad and Badin had been badly affected in this regard, the report mentioned. Approximately, 368 fish farms in said districts had been damaged which were established on 16352 acres of land, report added.
Report further stated that not only the private sector has suffered this huge loss, but public sector has also faced the share from this irreparable loss. Similarly, the people related to poultry sector of 16 districts of Sindh, including Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Thatta, Dadu, Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Matiari, Tando Mohammad Khan, Larkana, Qamabar-Shahdadkot, Kashmor-Kandhkot, Naushehroferoze, Khairpur Mir's, Ghotki, Shaikarpur, and Sanghar have suffered the huge loses due to recent heavy rains, report mentioned.
Approximately, more than 900 poultry forms have been damaged in above-mentioned districts and over 2.5 million birds have been died or washed away of these forms due to heavy rains, report added. In this connection, a high level official of Livestock and Fisheries department told Business Recorder that Sindh government is not in a mood to compensate the affected people of fisheries and poultry sectors that's why nothing has been initiated in this regard.
