Work under way to increase capacity of prisons

With the completion of the ongoing construction work of new barracks, cells and prisons, the province will be able to accommodate the growing number of prisoners. Official sources told Business Recorder on Monday that the number of prisoners in the province is about 13,500 while the prisons have the capacity to accommodate only 10,000 prisoners.
According to details Sindh has following prisons: Central prison Karachi, Central prison Hyderabad, Central prisons-I and II of Sukkur, Central prison Larkana, Central prison Khairpur, District prison Malir, District prison Dadu, District prison Badin, District prison Benazir Bhutto Abad (Nawabshah), District prison Sanghar, District prison Mirpurkhas, District prison Shikarpur, District prison Jacobabad, District prison Naushehroferoze, District prison Ghotki, District prison Larkana, Special prison Nara, Hyderabad, Youthful offenders Industrial School Karachi, Youthful offenders Industrial School Hyderabad, Youthful offenders Industrial School Larkana, Youthful offenders Industrial School Sukkur, Special prison for women Karachi, Special prison for women Hyderabad and women ward central prison -II Sukkur.
So far, the construction of Mirpurkhas, Thatta and Shaheed Benazirabad prisons is underway and about 90 percent work has been completed, sources said. While, the construction of new cells in Central prison Karachi, new barracks in District pprison Malir is also underway An official of Prisons department told Business Recorder that about 10,000 prisoners out of the total 13,500 are UTPs while the rest are convicted.
