Substandard CNG cylinders: SHC issues notices to respondents

24 Dec, 2011

A division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday issued notices to respondents in a constitutional petition against use of sub-standard CNG cylinders and kits in public transport vehicles.
The bench after initial hearing of the petition moved by one Israr Ahmed through Farrukh Usman advocate against the installation of used and sub-standard CNG cylinders and other related equipment in public transport, ordered issuance of notices to respondents including secretaries of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Oil and Gas Regularity Authority (Ogra), Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDIP), Chief Inspector of Explosives, All Pakistan CNG Association and home secretaries of all the four provinces.
The petitioner submitted that the respondents are over-sighting the use of sub-standard CNG equipment in public transport vehicles by unqualified persons, which is a serious threat to the lives of commuters. He submitted that a number of incidents have been reported due to bursting of CNG cylinders, resulting loss of several precious lives and the authorities concerned have not initiated any action against such illegal installations. He prayed the court to order for removal of sub-standard CNG cylinders and other equipment from the public transport vehicles and also clamp down all unauthorised CNG conversion centres.
