Malir Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Rao Anwar was removed from his post Saturday morning and his name might be placed on Exit Control List (ECL) over the killing of 27-year-old Naqeebullah Mehsud in an alleged encounter.
The decision was taken after the probe committee submitted its initial inquiry report on Saturday. Anwar’s name has also been placed on the ECL on the recommendation of the probe committee, local media reported.
According to a notification issued by Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police AD Khawaja, SSP Adeel Hussain Chandio has been assigned charge of Malir district in Anwar's place. The SSP has been suspended to ensure a fair inquiry into the alleged encounter in which Naqeebullah was killed, reads the press release issued by the IG.
On Friday, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar took suo motu notice of the extrajudicial killing of Naqeebullah. The chief justice summoned a report from the Sindh police chief in seven days.
Anwar had claimed that the slain suspect was allegedly involved in several high-profile terror cases and had ties with terrorist outfits. Twenty-seven-year-old Naqeebullah, hailing from South Waziristan, was among the four suspects killed in an alleged encounter with a police team headed by Anwar in Usman Khaskheli Goth last week.
