Partly Facetious: Qureshi's speech more substantive than Imran's

27 Dec, 2011

"The people were trucked in from somewhere else."
"What in the world are you talking about?"
"Imran Khan's jalsa in Karachi, the Karachiites were not there."
"And you are saying that because?"
"Because they were not sitting down on the street silently and listening, or seated in a room listening."
"You are being facetious."
"Well not really, it seemed like any old jalsa in Lahore or Peshawar. People were standing and waving the flag and..."
"Well there you go! The jalsa was a reflection of the true spirit of reconciliation - and reconciliation between different ethnic and sectarian groups rather than reconciliation forged behind closed doors with people getting lucrative contracts or appointments or..."
"I get it. So what next?"
"And I also think the Imran Khan cult as a leader has been born - you know like Benazir Bhutto's and Nawaz Sharif's and..."
"Why do you think that?"
"Because I honestly believe that the speech delivered by Shah Mehmood Qureshi was more substantive than Imran Khan's and yet I am positive that the hundreds of thousands who came to the jalsa came to see and hear Imran."
"There too I agree. So you reckon change is in the air?"
"The people certainly support change and no one can derail it. Remember Z A Bhutto? He also captured the hearts and minds of the people of this country!"
"That's true but I hope that Imran doesn't turn into Z A Bhutto - if at any time the people don't want to give him as large a majority as he needs he must not manipulate the polls."
"I hope so but with the retired hurt President refusing to hold early elections in spite of his party's performance in every field but in keeping his coalition partners happy..."
"Hey one question: will Altaf bhai leave the government - his statements about Imran and Imran's about him are positive post Karachi jalsa."
"Ah yes and then too a change can come, a constitutional change."
"So no need for the judiciary or the establishment..."
"Correct and Gilani can smoke that in his expensive imported pipe."
