Nawaz's attempts to derail democracy failed: Riaz

31 Dec, 2011

Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz Ahmed on Friday said that attempts by Nawaz Sharif to derail the democratic system had failed and he would have now to wait till next elections. Talking to media persons outside the Punjab Assembly, Raja Riaz said the memo case was nothing but to malign the leadership of Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
"We are true patriots and cannot even think of going against Pakistan," he added. Denying any rift between the government and the judiciary, he said they had high esteem for courts and honour their decisions. Replying to a question, Raja Riaz said due to stubborn attitude of Sharif brothers and their autocratic policies, their people were leaving them. The Pakistan Mulim League-Nawaz, he said, would face a crushing defeat in the next elections. He said that nobody was leaving the PPP. "We are followers of the Bhuttos, who sacrificed their lives for democracy," he observed.
