Opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Thursday warned the government against its possible move to pass resolution from the National Assembly in favour of President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani as well as any vote of confidence, saying any such bid would be resisted with full force.
Talking to reporters outside the Parliament House, Nisar said that any such move would be tantamount of defying the apex court verdicts and would fuel confrontation with state institutions like judiciary and military. He further said that it would be meant to burden the parliament with the failures of the government.
He also raised objections on the emergency session of National Assembly, saying that the government by convening the session was trying to use the parliament as a shield in its confrontation with other state institutions. Nisar also hinted a stormy session on Friday (today), saying that the opposition will register strong protest in the house on convening of the session as well as on the current political situation in the country.
"PML-N will never allow the government to use the forum of the parliament for hiding its failures as well as for achieving its political designs," he added. He also rejected the offer by the government to initiate debate on the current political situation, saying that his party did not requisition the session and it would not initiate the debate.
He asked the government to explain as to why the session has been convened. To a question, the opposition leader said that his party would not offer its shoulder to save the government, saying that doing the same would be tantamount to negate strengthening of the democratic system.
To another question, he said that passing vote of confidence would be meant to negate decisions of the judiciary and would also send negative message to judiciary as well as other state institutions. He further said that heads of various opposition parties held meeting at his chamber on Thursday and they agreed on four basic points to deal with the present political crisis.
He said those attended the meeting include JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Professor Khurshid Ahmed, PPP-Sherpao Chief Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao while more political parties would attend another meeting to be held today (Friday), which will also be attended by PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif. Giving details, Nisar said that all opposition parties agreed that present political situation is precarious and steps should be taken to defuse it.
Secondly, he said that Supreme Court verdicts should be implemented in true letter and spirit. Third, all opposition parties agreed that no undemocratic step would be tolerated in the present situation and lastly the conditions warrant that fresh free and fair elections should be held as it is the only way out to steer the country out from the current quagmire.
He further said that holding fresh election was the only constitutional option to overcome the political crisis. To another question, Nisar said that Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) has started contacting other political parties for a united stance and for the purpose contacts would also be made with the coalition partners other than PPP.
