A gang of robbers took away Rs 1.1 million from a private bank's branch in the jurisdiction of Jamshed Quarter police station that proved to be the first bank robbery of 2012. According to SHO Humayun, at least nine armed men entered into the bank located in Jigar Murad Abadi Road near Government Islamia College on Tuesday morning. After snatching the weapons from the security guard, Noor Muhammad, they held the entire staff hostage at gunpoint.
They took Rs 1.1 million from the cash counter and fled with the snatched weapons. He said the bank guard was taken into custody for interrogation and a case, 60/12, was registered against the unidentified robbers on the complaint of branch manager Irfan. He said that a single guard was deputed at the branch, which was a security lapse on part of the bank administration. It is to be mentioned here that this is the first bank heist of 2012. However, the city witnessed 19 bank robberies last year.
