For six years, Samsung has held the top most position in India’s smartphone market and now this position has been taken by another smartphone brand, Xiaomi.
Since 2012, the South Korean tech giant Samsung was the dominant one in India before being overthrown by the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi recently. As per Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi has beaten Samsung to become the largest smartphone manufacturer with a market share of 25% in 2017’s fourth quarter as compared to Samsung’s 23% market share in India.
The research states that the smartphone shipments have increased by 12% in the country from which Xiaomi holds 25% share, Samsung holds 23%, Lenovo, Oppo and Vivo hold 6%, and 34% market share is held by other brands altogether.

Also, data from another market research organization, Canalys, indicate that Xiaomi shipped almost 8.2 million units in Q4 as compared to Samsung’s 7.3 million. When compared to 2016’s data analysis, Xiaomi went up to a huge ride from 9% to 25% whereas, Samsung dropped from 24% to 23%.
However, Samsung is still at top according to overall statistics of Financial Year 2017 with a market share of 24% while Xiaomi has share of 19%. Yet, Xiaomi also leads the e-commerce sales in India marking itself the largest online brand, reported Tech Juice.
However, according to Android Central, Samsung had countered the Q4 figures saying that shipments do not associate to market share and is still the number one smartphone brand ‘by a distance’. It cited the German market research firm GfK’s data according to which Samsung has 45% value market share and 40% volume market share in India. Xiaomi contradicted saying that GfK does not count the online division.
