The meter-readers of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited staged protest outside SNGPL headquarters against the death of their fellow Kaleemullah, resident of Mianchannu, who died in a protest camp outside the office of the company, on Friday. The protesters started pelting stones at the office and forcibly entered it. As a result of their siege, employees of the company locked themselves inside the office.
Police cordoned off the roads leading to the head-office due to which people faced difficulties. The employees of the office were still in the office till filing of this report. On Thursday, SNGPL employees staged a sit-in with their families out side the SNGPL head office. They were of the view that the company advertised new jobs in the newspapers, but they never regularised us. They also said that leaders of PPP and PML (N) came to the office and showed solidarity with them only for a 'photo session'.
Earlier, on Monday, more than 100 meter-readers hired on contract protested against SNGPL administration for not confirming them on jobs. They said they have been working for the company for the past many years but are still to be regularised. They added that even the contractual employees in other government departments were given permanent employment. They pointed out that officials in the company had assured them many times that they will be given permanent employment whenever the posts became available.
