Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) which emerged as the largest opposition party in the Senate, is likely to nominate Senator Ishaq Dar as opposition leader in the Upper House of the Parliament. After winning eight seats, became the second largest party with a total of 14 senators. Currently, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidery of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) is the leader of opposition.
According to PML-N sources, Senator Ishaq Dar, who won his seat reserved for technocrats and Ulema from Punjab, is the strongest candidate to be nominated for the slot of the opposition leader in the Upper House. They said that the party leadership was mulling nominating Dar for the office of the leader of the opposition in the Senate. The Senate session has been summoned on March 12 at 10:00 am to transact its business of oath-taking of the newly-elected members and the election of the Chairman and the Deputy Chairman. This will be followed by election of the opposition leader.
