Ferrer nabs another Acapulco crown

05 Mar, 2012

Top-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer won his third straight Acapulco ATP title on Saturday - and his third title of 2011 - with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over compatriot Fernando Verdasco. Ferrer, ranked sixth in the world, added the title to the one he captured a week earlier in Buenos Aires, and his season-opening victory in Auckland.
Eighth-seeded Verdasco was appearing in his first final of the season and had no answer to Ferrer, who did not face a break point as he wrapped up the match in 69 minutes. Italy's Sara Errani lifted the women's title, rallying for a 5-7, 7-6 (7/2), 6-0 victory over compatriot Flavia Pennetta.
Errani, the third seed, and second-seeded Pennetta battled through the first two sets in nearly two hours, but once she emerged with the second-set tiebreak victory Errani was on her way. She cruised through the third to win her third WTA title in two hours, 28 minutes. "We started with a lot of breaks," Errani noted of an opening set in which they traded breaks in the first seven games. "It was a really hard match, a real battle. Beating her is very difficult."
