Non-provision of facilities in jails: LHC seeks report from IG prison

10 Mar, 2012

The Lahore High Court on Friday issued a notice to IG prison and sought a report about the facilities being provided to jail inmates in the provinces of Punjab within a month. The petitioner Fiyaz Ahmed contended that a number of jail inmates were detained in jails for not paying minor fines and Diyat.
The petitioner contended that jail inmates were not enjoying the basic facilities in the jails which was sheer violation of law. He said that the jails were over crowded and government had failed to make new jails and to provide better facilities. He therefore prayed to the court to direct the respondent government to provide better facilities to the jail inmates and release the jail inmates detained on minor fines. The court after hearing the petitioner counsel at length issued notices to the respondents and sought a report about the facilities provided to the jail inmates.
