Babar Awan case: LHC adjourns proceedings till March 16

10 Mar, 2012

The Lahore High Court here Friday adjourned to March 16 the proceedings in a petition filed against Senator Babar Awan for further arguments. Earlier the court amicus curiae A K Dogar contended that provincial election commission did not consider the objections raised on the nomination papers of Babar Awan. He said respondent election commission did not perform its duty in accordance with the law.
The court rose for the day when A K Gogar was still submitting his arguments on the maintainability of the petition. Advocate Shahid Jami filed the petition and contented that Awan was not eligible for the office of senator because he had concealed his assets from the Election Commission making him liable to be declared as disqualified.
He said the ECP unlawfully accepted Awan's nomination papers for a senate seat from Punjab ignoring that Awan was a defaulter of agriculture tax, accumulated illegal assets, had a bogus PhD degree and mocked judiciary in a contempt of court case at SC. The petitioner prayed the court to set aside the order of election commission about acceptance of nomination papers of Awan. A K Dogar was still submitting his submissions when court rose for the day.
