Legislators of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) staged protest demo outside the Sindh Assembly on Friday against the increase in demands of extortion of money from the business community and incidents of street crimes in Karachi. Members of the Coordination Committee of the MQM Waseem Aftab, Raza Haroon, Dr Sagheer Ahmed and workers of the MQM were also present on the occasion.
They said that the MQM would not rest content unless stern action is taken against the extortion mafia operating in the city with impunity. The demonstrators were carrying placards condemning the threats being given to the business community by the extortion mafia, shouting slogans against demands for extortion from the business community.
Speaking on the occasion member of the Coordination Committee Waseem Aftab said that Karachi is not an abandoned city. The MQM has full sympathy with the business community, and it would not rest content, unless stern and visible action against the extortion mafia and their sponsors is taken. Aftab said that the people of Karachi are well aware of the elements behind the Sher Shah tragedy, and they know who are instigating bloodshed and collecting extortion money in Karachi.
Deputy Parliamentary Leader of the MQM in the Sindh Assembly Faisal Sabzwari said that Karachi is the largest contributor in the federal revenue collection, and the increasing activities of the extortion mafia should have been a cause of grave concern for the government. Sabzwari said that the elements supporting the extortion mafia in Karachi are, in effect, the enemy of Pakistan. The criminals demanding extortion money are roaming freely in the city but no action is being taken against them by the government.
