30 Mar, 2012

Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) arranged second 'Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Conference' on Thursday.
Eleven papers were presented in the conference including Design Safety Management during Projects, British Safety Council 5-Star Environmental Rating Programme, Water Conservation Techniques, HSE Culture, Road Safety, Environment in Legal Prospective, Enhancing Safety Features of Ammonia Storage Tank, Case Study of Sustainability Initiatives at Hala EPF Project, HSE Culture 'If You can't measure it you can't implement it', Appraisal of Hearing Conservation Programme and Determination of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) for Process Industry.
Eminent speakers from widely diverse fields attended the prestigious event. Mohammed Adil Khattak, Chief Executive Officer, ARL, highlighted the significance of HSE in today's business environment and importance of sharing best business practices and learning from experiences of each others for a safer future.
He said that organising such a knowledge-sharing events was in line with ARL's core value of 'Learning and Innovation' and its plans to make HSE conference an annual event. Khattak said that the challenges "we all face in managing facilities are neither new nor unique". Many of the failures, which had led to serious accidents, when analysed, were repeats of similar failures in the past and therefore, a problem of loss of corporate memory.
He said that the key point is that in each of our sectors there was a tendency to view our problems as unique or special to us, and not to look enough at others' experiences as learning points. Keeping in mind, this weak link, we have today managed to get together professionals from major industries of diverse sectors under one roof to explore a very different type of leadership - one where we share knowledge - not only our solutions and best practices but also our problems and challenges.
Khattak also highlighted the changes and achievements brought about in the field of HSE at ARL including achieving the important milestone of more than 10.0 million safe man hours recently. Ejaz Hussain Randhawa, Head (Operations), ARL thanked all participants for making the conference a resounding success.-PR
