Industrial activities in seven industrial estates came to a halt on Wednesday as workers could not make to work due to unavailability of public transport. Awami National Party (ANP) Sindh gave a mourning call on Thursday after Zainullah, the joint secretary of ANP Patel Para was shot dead on Wednesday near Intermediate Board office.
Tension gripped the city on Wednesday evening after the killing of Zainullah. The movement of goods between industries, markets and upcountry suffered while the export of goods to various foreign destinations remained unaffected despite thin movement of containers and goods transport on the road.
Transport remained partially suspended throughout the city as Transport Ittehad had announced to keep the transports off the road. Some CNG stations and petrol pumps were opened in the city. Taking advantage of the situation, private transport owners were demanding exorbitant fares from the commuters.
Chairman, Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Ehtishamuddin said that attendance in industrial units was around 60 percent as only those who lived in the vicinity turned up. He expressed hope that workers of evening shift made to work as pubic transport had started operating and petrol pumps and CNG had opened. Chairman North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry, Abdul Rasheed Fodderwala said that all industrial units in this industrial estate operated with small workforce. He said that some miscreants damaged CCTV cameras installed in the areas for monitoring criminal activities.
