'Gangster' killed, ASI injured: residents of Lyari protest against encounter

Residents of Lyari on Sunday staged protest demonstration against Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Sindh Police following the killing of an alleged gangster in police encounter.
According to police, tension gripped Lyari and its surrounding areas after the killing of an alleged gangster, Saqib alias Sakhi, in an encounter by CID in Lyari. The family and the residents of Lyari including the activists and workers of the banned People's Amn Committee staged protest demonstration in several parts of Lyari.
The protesters, who burnt tires and blocked all major arteries for vehicular traffic, alleged the law enforcers for staging fake encounter to kill the deceased. The protesters also resorted to indiscriminate firing to suspend all routine and commercial activities in the area. Protesters also attacked the police with the petrol bombs. In retaliation, the police fired tear gas shells and resorted to aerial firing to disperse the protestors.
Tension engulfed other Baloch dominant areas including Teen Hatti, Old Golimar and PIB Colony where unidentified armed motorcyclists resorted to heavy gunshots and suspended all commercial activities.
Police said the encounter between gangsters and the law enforcers took place at Chakiwara area that left an alleged gangster Saqib killed while an ASI, Waheed, sustained bullet wounds and was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment. Police claimed to have arrested another gangster, Kashif, during the said encounter and added that the deceased and the detained person were active workers of banned PAC. No case was registered till filing of this report.
