Power shortfall shrinks to 3,800 megawatts

03 Apr, 2012

Power shortfall has reduced to 3,800MW against 5,000MW last week with increase in hydel generation. According to Pepco sources, hydel generation went up to 2,569MW against negligible levels, earlier. However, still water level both in Tarbela and Mangla was reported at zero level.
Meanwhile, power generation through thermal and IPPs stood at 1,862MW and 5,783MW, respectively. The sources said hydel generation is likely to improve further ahead. However, they added, that hydel generation would be siphoned off by the excessive usage of air conditioners, which means the system would remain facing shortfall ahead. Also, they added, recent increase in oil prices would also increase the cost of thermal generation in a situation when circular debt is swelling up fast. Therefore, they predicted tough time ahead.
