Federal Law Minister Farooq H Naek has said organ donation and transplantation is not un-Islamic, as our religion attaches great value to saving human life. Speaking as a chief guest at a seminar on "Organ donation and transplantation" organised in collaboration with Karachi Club on Saturday night, he said whoever wants to donate organ they have the right to donate it, and parliament has passed a law in this regard.
However, he said organ donation for commercial purposes is a punishable crime. On the occasion, the head of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, Dr Adeeb Rizvi, said transplantation gives a new lease of life to the people who need organ replacement.
He said before legislation about transplantation, organs were sold in the country on a wide scale. Legislation about it would directly benefit deserving people, he added. Dr Rizvi said Farooq Naek and the two houses of parliament played an important role in legislation on transplantation. On the occasion, former Justice Fakharuddin G Ebrahim announced he would donate his lever to a deserving person and convey his will in this regard to his heirs.
