US respects Pakistan's policies: Grossman

27 Apr, 2012

While expressing his grief over the check post incident, US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Ambassador Marc Grossman said that United States respects all policies underlined by Pakistan's parliament. "United States values highly the recommendations of the Parliament of Pakistan. US respects integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan," said Grossman while addressing a joint press conference with Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani here on Thursday.
He said that no decision had yet been taken on the issue of Nato supply resumption, adding that the operation to restore peace in the region should continue till its logical end. Jalil Abbas Jilani said Pakistan would take a decision in connection with the Nato supplies in the light of parliament's guidelines.
Highlighting multifaceted relations between Pakistan and the US, the Foreign Secretary said that the country wanted to embark on the journey of new ties with the US in the light of parliament's recommendations. He said that Pakistan wanted to build relations with the US on mutual trust, adding that Pakistan would continue to make efforts for peace in Afghanistan.
He said new terms of engagement were needed for the restoration of Nato supplies through Pakistan in the wake of the US attack on Pakistan soil in Mohmand Agency. Missile strikes inside Pakistan were absolutely unacceptable, illegal and counterproductive, secretary added. Grossman said US President Obama also expressed his grief over the check post incident. The US envoy said his country was constantly in touch with Islamabad to move ahead in the light of Pakistani parliament's guidelines.
Expressing grief over the Salala check post incident, the US official underscored the need that such incident should not recur. He said that during talks at the Foreign Office, both sides had discussed ways and means to make the reconciliation process in Afghanistan a success. US, he said, wanted to promote trade and investment in Pakistan's private sector, adding that strategic relations between the two countries should be clear. Grossman said that stable relations between Pakistan and US would be in the best interest of the people of both the countries.
